Roofs / My Enchanted Basement

Roofs / My Enchanted Basement

Who is Matthias Vogt? He is the founding member of deep house super group Motorcitysoul and an important artist in his own right. As Motorcitysoul, Matthias and partner C-Rock have completed three full length albums, the latest entitled "Technique" for Simple Records, they have collaborated with house music legend Chez Damier, and they have remixed countless artists, with many underground hits among them. For Matthias, and fortunately for all of us, his work as part of MCS is just the beginning. He is a trained pianist having written four full length albums in the group re:jazz and two albums with his new band the Matthias Vogt Trio. He has been DJing since 1990 and currently holds a weekly residency at Frankfurt's Cocoon Club. Recently, he has been making waves as a solo artist and producer writing house and techno tracks for labels like Saw Recordings, Urbantorque, Prog City Deep and Polytone. For his Fresh Meat debut, Matthias has invented two unique cuts bubbling with personality and melodic synth work. The EP opener, "Roofs," starts cleanly with an analogesque drum kit. A deep dark mono oscillator bass sets things off accompanied by playful percussion and completed by memorable chiming chords. As the cadence hops along the bass line awakens from it's filtered slumber and an extended atmospheric break down ensues, culminating into a surprisingly growling climax that returns eventually to the simple rhythm track. Matthias makes the circular journey sound natural and effortless. "Roofs" comes complete with a remix by the mighty Audio Soul Project. The rendition is starkly different from the original, keeping only bits of percussion and the chord structure. In step with the recently released "Bit More Grit" EP, ASP turn in a back-to-roots house bumper, complete with funky acid, stacks of Rhodes piano, a deep as the ocean sub bass, a bedlam of Latin percussion and roaring Jupiter 8 stabs that hearken back to the hey day of KMS Records. The vibes and midrange percussion also recall Audio Soul Project’s brilliant work from the early zeros for labels like Greyhound, NRK and Tango. The second original track by Matthias is the hypnotic "My Enchanted Basement.” This time he fully exposes his roots in jazz and Chicago house, writing skippy swinging electronic chords complimented by soothing piano and subdued lead melodies. His drum programming is wisely sparse allowing the interplay of musical instruments to bloom. With love in his heart, Nathan Drew Larsen, Fresh Meat's very own DJ Harvey, slices up "My Enchanted Basement" into a 10+ minute melodic but tracky edit, squeezing out every ounce of undulating ether. He extends many sections of the track, creating a chunky organic arrangement. The playful splicing and interchanging of sections achieves a Summery hot march that should blaze on most discerning dance floors.
