Jimmy Smith Plays Fats Waller

Jimmy Smith Plays Fats Waller

by Scott YanowAlthough Fats Waller was the first jazz organist, he mostly played piano throughout his career. Organist Jimmy Smith's tribute to Waller is not imitative at all, but a good excuse to interpret seven jazz standards associated with Fats. With assistance from his regular trio -- guitarist Quentin Warren and drummer Donald Bailey -- Smith plays such unlikely numbers as "Everybody Loves My Baby," "I've Found a New Baby" and Waller's two biggest hits ("Ain't Misbehavin"' and "Honeysuckle Rose") with soul and swing. An enjoyable outing.
