Marilyn Manson had a couple of strong moments on their debut album, Portrait of an American Family, but they had not delivered an indelible single until "The Beautiful People," and the first pulled from their second album, Antichrist Superstar. With its mock menace and pummeling metal triplets, it was the first Manson song with an oversized hook ? the kind of song that even the group's detractors couldn't get out of their heads. Also, since it had an actual swing (an alien concept in previous Manson recordings), it opened itself up to remixes, such as Danny Saber's funky, clever reworking, "The Horrible People." Saber's mix is on the first part of the two-part "The Beautiful People" single, along with the single version of the title track, the group's breakthrough American hit, "Sweet Dreams," and the diverting throwaway "Crypt Orchid."
