Ode

Ode

Is there any resemblance between a Dutch redheaded female saxplayer in the current era on the one hand, and the rough souljazz made by Afro-American men in the the ‘60s and ‘70s of the last century on the other? Yes there is. For a long time, saxophonist Jelske Hoogervorst has a soft spot for the intensely groovy, sometimes surprisingly simple compositions of her heroes like Stanley Turrentine, Cannonball Adderley, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Harris and Herbie Hancock. She started a band and named it Sugar (after Stanley Turrentine’s composition and LP). With Sugar, Jelske restored some beautiful forgotten souljazz tunes, added new flavors to the genre and re-arranged poptunes into jazz-instrumentals. Their debut-album, entitled Ode, was financed by the audience through crowdfunding. It’s an ode to the heroes and the era of souljazz. The CD will be released at the label Speedwell Tracks (www.speedwelltracks.com) on May 23th 2013.
