Between Sunlight and Shadow

Between Sunlight and Shadow

Rich in melody, careful in its pacing, Between Sunlight and Shadow glows with musical and lyrical intelligence. John Green on keyboards, Matt Zafiratos on guitar and bass, and Jamie McGregor on drums all sing as well, and their harmonies add further texture to their instrumental prowess and imagination.

The disc's 15 tracks bleed together in a first-person narrative of a late-night drive "deep into the night" -- a metaphor for a journey from confusion and paranoia to "someplace safe." The imagery is so well sustained, and the conclusion so open-ended, that it resonates far better than many concept albums.

Ranging from intimate, acoustic piano and guitar, to slicing electrical storms, the music is haunting. Green's proggy synth work on "Flight" (which has a thrilling, stop-time denouement), the cavernous space opening of "Inferno" (which leads into raging metal riffery worthy of Borknagar), the organically developed themes, and the superb group vocals (check out "In Passing" and "All Comes Down") -- all of it adds up to an impressive piece of work.
