"Skinnerbox can't be said to belong to any particular scene. They are their own scene, and have
been patiently nurturing it for over half a decade, through countless gigs in squalid dives, the revolving
door of their rhythm section, passing music fads and sudden success stories among some of their less
challenging, less compelling and less groovy Lower East Side peers. Not merely "just another ska band,"
their arsenal also encompasses reggae. funk, jazz, New Orleans. big-band swing, punk rock. blues. R&B,
Latin, dancehall... and others I forgot. But there is a psychotic kind of focus maintained throughout, even
with the potentially volatile mix of old-school conservatism and resolute open-mindedness (and there
have been some volatile moments on and offstage along the way). When all is said and done. these guys
swing madly and lay down some bad-a** grooves, and stick to their charted path with righteous tenacity,
and that's the approach which tends to produce music that lasts. Just imagine Fishbone produced by
Coxsone Dodd at Studio One. and you're about halfway there. Almost."
