Multi-instrumentalist Rick Cunningham’s new recording Till The Warfare Is Over explores the stark, open harmonies and religious themes of shaped note and Sacred Harp music using acoustic instruments. Normally, shaped note music is sung a cappella with four vocal parts; however, here stringed instruments, woodwinds, free reeds, and pipes provide the voices that weave the intricate textures found in this distinctly American musical tradition. Till The Warfare Is Over is a unique and reverent interpretation of early and modern shaped note music from The Sacred Harp, The Shenandoah Harmony, and Northern Harmony, and includes newly composed works not yet available in any collection.
