Jackal formed in late 2006 when drummer Will McGrath, his brother Theo (guitar and vocals) and Alec Cummins (bassist) started writing and playing together. They set out to meld a raw punk/alternative sound, inspired by bands such as Dinosaur Jr, with a Black Sabbath-type hard rock vibe. They began gigging around New Zealand and in 2009 they self-funded and released their debut album, a 9 track record entitled ‘Sleeping Life’. Following the release, they decided to become a four-piece band, with Will switching to guitar and a new drummer being added to the line-up. This change meant newer songs were more complex and varied in their dynamics. In April 2011, their second album, entitled ‘Furnace Creek’, was released, again totally independently. Soon after this, Hayden Keach joined as drummer and the band began their most intense gigging period yet, using their shows as a testing ground for the material that would eventually find its way onto the next album. In order to make their new release sound different from what they had done before, Jackal decided to change their normal habit of quickly recording their albums and have spent a year in and out of the studio recording ‘Only Everything’. This, their third album, demonstrates the band's continued evolution, sounding little like either of their earlier releases. The new material is driven by a focus on the subtlety of shifting dynamics, and the tension and power created by the interplay of the instruments. Even a single listen of ‘Only Everything’ demonstrates that it is a truly unique musical statement that moves through various moods effortlessly. Jackal are now preparing a tour in support of the new material.
