Nora York

Voice is at the center of my expression and creative invention, engaging the diverse disciplines of composition, live performance, and visual and multimedia arts. I have been awarded two New York State Council on the Arts Composers Commissions. The first (2002) was to complete a song cycle entitled Breaking Tradition, an exploration of Turn of the Century and folk music. Spring '09 I was awarded a second NYSCA composers commission to complete Jump, my artistic response to operatic repertoire, specifically Puccini's Tosca. Jump is a collaboration with playwright David Greenspan, director JoAnne Akalaitis, artist Kiki Smith and arranger James E. Lawrence. The Public Theater in New York City commissioned the piece, and presented a staged workshop production January 2011 in the Under the Radar Festival. My first recording To Dream The World was released by Evidence 1995, my second Cd Alchemy, (a Japanese release) was co-composed with jazz composer Maria Schneider.  My third CD What I Want, (ArtistShare 2005) represents the outcome of my 2002 NYSCA commission. Songs from What I Want have been in a variety of films in Europe. My forth recording project Power/Play (2007 ArtistShare) a musical re-collection of original compositions and mash-ups framed by remixed verses of Bob Dylan's Master's of War, was initially commissioned by the Brooklyn Academy of Music as a concert to compliment a film series "Hanoi to Hollywood". I compose for film and television. In 2010 I co-wrote with James E. Lawrence the title song and scored Klimawechsel, the first television series of German filmmaker Doris Dorrie. I have contributed music to five of Dorrie's films.  In recent years I have also composed music for ABC and HBO television. Since 1987 I've performed at concert venues, universities and music festivals throughout the U.S., Mexico, Canada and Europe to include the Newport Jazz Festival, the Ottawa Jazz Festival, JVC Jazz festival, Women in Jazz Festival, New York, Lincoln Center Out of Doors.  I received an Anderson Endowment Speaker Series grant (Penn State) for a performance of Power/play. My performance is a featured TED talk on TED.com I have collaborated with visual artists to create site-specific performances.  Kiki Smith has been instrumental in the development of Jump.  My earlier concert works include a radically remixed version of Bob Dylan's Masters of War for  "The Peace Tower (1966/2006)" at the 2006 Biennial: Day for Night, The Whitney Museum of American Art.  I created a musical landscape for the work of Leon Golub at The New York Kunsthalle.  Through the years painter Jerry Kearns and I have invented numerous collaborative performance based works for Exit Art NYC, Chelsea Art Museum, Kent Gallery, and Smack Mellon in Brooklyn.   The Franklin Furnace's inaugural webcasting season awarded Foxfire, my collaborative work with artist Nancy Spero, The Future of the Present grant 1998. It remains online as part of the Franklin Furnace's archive. In 2005, music historian W. Royal Stokes featured a profile on York in the "Visionaries and Eclectics" section of his book, Growing Up With Jazz, Oxford University Press (pp. 214-226). I am the faculty of the Tisch School of Drama at New York University
